Building Numeracy with Middle Grades Students (5-8)

Are your middle school students struggling with mathematical reasoning? Look no further! You have found a professional development course to support your efforts. The resources and training provided during the KCM's "Building Numeracy with Middle Grades Students 5-8" course will empower you to take student learning and understanding to the next level.

Description:

Students often struggle to further advance their math learning from the intermediate grades to the rigors of middle school. But when students develop their numeracy skills and grow their toolbox of mathematical reasoning strategies, they increase their mathematical agency in doing sophisticated mathematics. Teachers will explore the power of representations, problems strings, and use of reasoning strategies to develop numeracy, proportional reasoning, and algebraic thinking in their middle school students.

In this course, participants will:

  • learn teaching strategies for helping students develop the multiplicative and proportional reasoning needed for middle school math.
  • be provided with games such as 24 Game and manipulatives such as cuisenaire rods to develop numeracy through modeling number and quantitative relationships.
  • explore Desmos activities designed to illuminate key ratio and proportion concepts.
  • receive several books including Building Powerful Numeracy, Lessons and Activities for Building Powerful Numeracy, Figuring out Fluency, and Elementary and Middle School Mathematics Teaching Developmentally.

Cost: $200 per participant
