Developing Mathematical Reasoning and Fluency (5-8)

Mathematics is meant to make sense. Do your students believe this?

Join us to learn ways to help students develop real mathematical reasoning that sticks.

Description:

The goal of mathematics education is to develop students’ mathematical reasoning. The Developing Mathematical Reasoning and Fluency year-long, in-depth course provides middle grades teachers with information and materials to enable them to strengthen mathematics instruction by building from students’ current funds of knowledge. Participants will learn teaching strategies for helping students develop the more sophisticated reasoning needed for middle grades mathematics with the goal of improving student access to grade-level content. Activities will highlight important mathematical relationships and strategies middle grades students need for a strong foundation of mathematical thinking.

Each participant will also receive the following books and resources:

  • Developing Mathematical Reasoning by Pam Weber Harris
  • Figuring out Fluency in Mathematics Teaching and Learning by Jennifer Bay-Williams and John SanGiovanni
  • “24” Game- Fractions
  • “24” Game – Single Digits
