Math Explorations in Primary Geometry (K-2)

Geometry is a part of every student's curriculum from Kindergarten through 12th Grade and beyond. The primary grades geometry standards lay the foundation for students to become confident and successful math people. In this 1-day course, participants will receive manipulatives, tools and resources to give their students the best foundation possible. This course is for all K-2 teachers and the instructional leaders who support them.

Description:

Playing in math class? Yes! When students “play” with and talk about shapes in 2 and 3 dimensions, they are actually developing their geometric reasoning! Geometry is a critical area spanning all elementary grade levels with connections to measurement, operations and algebraic thinking, and fractions.

In this course, participants will:

  • receive the book Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics for Grades K-2 and hands-on materials such as tangrams, 2D and 3D shapes.
  • deepen their understanding of the Van Hiele Model of geometric reasoning and the Geometry Standards within the Kentucky Academic Standards for Mathematics.

Cost: $100 per participant

Lexington, KY

Facilitator: Sumer Smith

Sessions 1 (in-person): November 14, 2023; 8:30 am - 3:30 pm Eastern Time
