  2010 Summer Professional Development Opportunities

Algebra: All Aboard! (A3)
http://www.rsvpbook.com/event.php?420325
This multi-faceted approach to teaching Algebra encourages students of all learning styles to master the big ideas and concepts. During five days in the summer and three fall follow-ups, teachers will apply the latest research to curricular and instructional strategies. Participants will practice using technology, manipulatives, vocabulary strategies, various representations, communication and connections to enhance student learning for all students. Many of the strategies and ideas gained can be used as interventions for struggling students. Participants will leave with a toolbox of over $800 worth of instructional materials to use immediately as they return to the classroom!

Understanding Fraction Concepts
http://www.rsvpbook.com/event.php?446001
Understanding Fraction Concepts (UFC) takes a conceptual approach to teaching fractions versus the procedural approach that textbooks provide. Participants will learn how to organize instruction using multiple concrete models and applying fraction ideas to real world situations so students develop a deep, conceptual understanding of fractions.

Styles & Strategies for Teaching Mathematics and Science
http://www.uky.edu/P12MathScience/
During this two-day workshop, participants will be introduced to The Thoughtful Classroom learning style model and will explore a number of powerful research-based instructional strategies to engage and motivate all styles of learners. The learning style model allows math and science teachers to easily incorporate differentiated learning experiences into daily lessons and unit plans. Additionally, teachers will leave with a variety of strategies that help them meet the needs of all learners in the classroom.

OPERATION: Basic Math
http://www.rsvpbook.com/event.php?403480
During the session participants will learn unique and motivational strategies that can be used as interventions to help students who struggle with the foundational concepts that are included in the Kentucky Big Idea of Number, Properties and Operations. Participants will leave with a variety of ways to assist students with being successful in learning addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Each participant receives $200 worth of training materials so they may return to their school and immediately implement the learned strategies including a tote bag containing game cards, base ten blocks, number cubes, dice and other manipulatives!

Lens on Mathematical Learning
http://www.rsvpbook.com/event.php?448320
Do your students struggle with certain math concepts and you are unsure why? Are you aware of the learning difficulties that students might have for the concepts in math you teach as you are designing assessments and identifying learning experiences? CTS is a set of resources developed through a grant from the National Science Foundation that can be used over time by PLCs and teachers to answer these key questions and provide insight into these critical instruction design questions. Join the P-12 Math and Science Outreach Unit of PIMSER at the University of Kentucky as we host this two-day workshop to discover how CTS can be a resource for helping teachers and their professional learning communities at school better meet their student’s needs. The facilitators (Appalachian Teacher Partners) will share their first-hand knowledge of how CTS has impacted not only how they have designed instruction, but also the resulting student learning.

The Power of Learning Targets
http://www.uky.edu/P12MathScience/
What does it look like when balanced assessment is implemented effectively in the classroom? What are the student learning results? How did learning targets drive this transformation? Join us for this two-day session to see how two Kentucky teachers have transformed their classroom using the Classroom Assessment for Student Learning model for balanced assessment.

web - AMERICAN STUDENTS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FIRST AMERICAN MATH CHALLENGE:  Count down to the American Math Challenge! From November 9 - 16, 2009, middle school students nationwide, ages 9-14, can sign up free of charge to compete online against other American students of similar age and ability in real time, 60-second mental arithmetic challenges. The American Math Challenge is hosted by The MATHCOUNTS Foundation, a non-profit that promotes middle school mathematics, and powered by Mathletics, the learning platform from 3P Learning, the global leader in online mathematics education. The student with the highest score will be declared American Math Champion and receive a Minted Gold Medal. Up to three top students will be chosen to represent the United States as Team Ambassadors on World Math Day, in March 2010. Last year, more than two million students from 204 countries participated.

Best-selling author and Guinness World Record Holder as the "Fastest Human Calculator" Scott Flansburg is Ambassador for the Challenge. Flansburg earned his title for his ability to process numbers with amazing speed and calculator accuracy. Now, "The Human Calculator" is using his extraordinary gift to inspire students, teachers, and "non-math" people, demonstrating that arithmetic really can be as easy as "0, 1, 2, 3." "Students compete in a multi-player game environment, inclusive of all levels of math ability, making math exciting," Flansburg notes. "Results show that participants will make significant improvement in their mental arithmetic skills and have fun in the process. All school children and homeschoolers are invited to participate." For more information and to register, visit www.americanmathchallenge.com.

  • College- and career- readiness standards - The National Governors’ Association Center for Best Practices (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) released the first official draft of the college- and career-readiness standards.

An excerpt from the Mathematics Standards Introduction:  The Common Core State Standards Initiative builds on a generation of standards efforts led by states and national organizations. On behalf of the states, we have taken a step toward the next generation of standards that are aligned to college- and career-ready expectations and are internationally benchmarked. These standards are grounded in evidence from many sources that shows that the next generation of standards in mathematics must be focused on deeper, more thorough understanding of more fundamental mathematical ideas and higher mastery of these fewer, more useful skills.

Learn how to teach fractions for understanding using the Rational Numbers Project (RNP) materials.

Target audiences: primary, intermediate, middle and high school regular and special ed teachers (see sessions described below).
Overview:
The Rational Numbers Project (RNP) developed at the University of Minnesota through funding from the National Science Foundation takes a conceptual approach to teaching fractions versus the procedural approach that textbooks provide. The RNP philosophy is that extended periods of time invested with manipulative materials developing concepts, order and equivalence ideas are needed before students can operate on fractions in a meaningful way. The book of fraction lessons that participants will receive is a product of several years of working with children in classrooms with this philosophy. Participants will learn how to organize instruction using multiple concrete models and applying fraction ideas to real world situations so students develop a deep, conceptual understanding of fractions. The manipulatives used in the training provide students with hands-on experience, while the lessons allow students opportunities to reflect on their thinking about fractions as they try to make sense of the formal symbolic system.
The PIMSER P-12 Math and Science Outreach unit at the University of Kentucky is offering 3 levels of this training; one for primary teachers, and the others for regular and special ed teachers of grades 4-9.  See below:

AdvanceKentucky

In partnership with the National Mathematics and Science Initiative (http://www.nationalmathandscience.org/), the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation (http://www.kstc.com/) is seeking math teachers interested in participating in the AdvanceKentucky initiative, which aims to increase student participation and success in AP courses by focusing on “Laying the Foundation” in Grades 6 - 11.

.pdf - Program Description Document
.pdf - Application information (deadline: May 15th) and Training Dates

Briefly, AdvKy-using NMSI's model-has a goal of accelerating students' participation and success in AP courses in math, science and English (MSE) to help increase the pipeline of college-ready high school graduates. The NMSI program is emulating a model created by AP Strategies, Inc. (APS) that has been very successful, especially with students in underserved populations.  Please see the 3 graphs on the attached Program Description that show 10 years of growth experienced by 10 APS schools.   These schools, much like KY's schools, have considerable challenges-each of these schools has a very high percentage of students who are members of underserved populations (particularly free and reduced lunches eligible and minority).

An important part of this model is to better prepare pre-AP students grades 6-11) for the rigor of AP and college courses.  APS uses a program called "Laying the Foundation" (LTF) for this purpose. AdvKy plans to introduce LTF training for Pre-AP teachers beginning in the 08/09 school year, initially to the participating schools.  We anticipate that non-AdvKy schools will be able to participate as well.

To make this happen, candidates for becoming certified LTF trainers must be identified and selected to attend training in Dallas this summer (July 8-14).  Attached is a flyer for distribution to colleagues and
Math Coaches with relevant experience, and who can become KSTC contractors, able to devote time during the school year and summer months to conducting LTF training in their subject area at various regional sites (to be determined).

Online Professional Development Research Study: 5th and 8th Grade Math Teachers

Boston College is conducting a research study as part of a US Department of Education Ready to Teach grant, the e-Learning for Educators Initiative. The primary goal of the overall initiative is to establish an effective and sustainable model of online professional development for teachers. Part of the initiative involves conducting a large-scale research study which will evaluate the effects of online professional development on teacher knowledge, teacher practices, and student achievement.

We invite all 5th grade Math and 8th grade Math teachers of traditional classrooms to participate in this study! The study spans three school semesters (Spring 2007, Fall 2007, and Spring 2008). Participating teachers will be randomly assigned to either the experimental group or the control group. Some details are listed below and all details can be found at our website: http://www.bc.edu/efe

Teachers assigned to the experimental group will participate in a series of three online professional development workshops, free of charge. These workshops were specifically designed for this study, focus on both content knowledge and pedagogical practices, and offer information and techniques that you can directly apply in the classroom. The workshops are targeted towards subjects where students tend to struggle and are based on state and national standards. Teachers completing the workshops are eligible for graduate credits. Teachers assigned to the control group will also have access to these same courses, free of charge, once the study completes (June 2008).

Teachers in both the experimental group and the control group will also take a series of online surveys and administer a series of online tests to their students. Teachers receive instant feedback about student performance from these tests, which can be used to inform future instruction. Additionally, teachers will receive a $300 stipend upon completion of all surveys and tests.

We support your efforts to improve teacher quality and student learning and strongly encourage you to participate. The workshops begin in May and July, and the first round of surveys and tests must be completed before the workshops begin, so sign up now! Please visit the research study website for more information or to register for the study http://www.bc.edu/efe

NCTM is now offering expanded topics in its popular E-Workshop series. But don't pack your bags, because we're bringing the workshops to you!

Gather your colleagues at your school for the workshop to share ideas among yourselves while sharing with fellow teachers around the globe. For only $95 per computer hook up, one site license will allow your group to get together in one room and join in via computer and speakerphone with other groups of teachers like you.

These E-Workshops provide an interactive overview of grade-band specific expectations as defined in NCTM’s Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. Using selected activities from NCTM’s Navigations series and NCTM’s journals, the E-Workshops will provide insights into ways of using these materials in the classroom.

Registration fee of $95.00 includes one computer sign in for your entire group. This allows the group to gather in one room and discuss the ideas and how they can be implemented across the board, not just in one teacher's classroom.

Recruiting Additional Online PD Facilitators for e-Learning Kentucky

e-Learning for Educators, funded through a 4.6 million US Department of Education Ready to Teach grant, is a multi-state collaboration between eight state education agencies and associated public broadcast stations. Kentucky is one of the eight states fortunate enough to have access to this high-quality online professional development for educators. The Kentucky initiative, called e-Learning Kentucky, resides in the Kentucky Virtual Schools, a project of the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE).

In January e-Learning Kentucky will have the third opportunity to recruit and train twelve Kentucky educators interested in facilitating online professional development courses. In partnership with EDC (Education Development Center) in Boston, e-Learning KY will select and train facilitators through a rigorous 11-week online course. Criteria necessary for future course facilitators include:

    • Interest in facilitating online professional development courses for e-Learning KY, KYVS
    • Relevant interpersonal and communication skills strong enough to engage online learners
    • Strong content and pedagogical knowledge and experience
    • Willingness to commit 4 to 6 hours each week for the 11 week online course January 30 – April 9. 2008
    • Willingness to commit to facilitating at least one 7-week online workshop following training. (You will receive a stipend for this work and the preference is this requirement be done during our ‘08 Summer PD session.)
    • Interest in joining the e-Learning Kentucky PD Provider team and continuing to facilitate online PD courses
    • Strong work ethic

Still interested? Then you should also know that during the 11-week course participants will:

    • Build leadership skills and grow professionally
    • Gain direct experience with online Blackboard course tools, synchronous and asynchronous discussions, and strategies for the online facilitation of adults
    • Develop an understanding of key implementation issues (such as access, universal design, and evaluation)
    • Earn a $500. stipend for successfully completing this  11 week online training

The deadline for Course Facilitator applications is close of business December 14, 2007. You will be notified about the status of your application during the week of January 7, 2008. If you have questions, please email our office Bob.Fortney@education.ky.gov or Anne.Robbins@education.ky.gov

If you are interested, please email elearningkyinquiry@education.ky.gov for additional information and the application.

  Opportunity Knocks, Kentucky Teachers!

Update:    Greetings from Bob Fortney, Senior Consultant with the KVHS team:
We are still looking for a few 8th grade math teachers and 7th grade English Language Arts teachers to participate in this online PD research study. You must still have students in session and be willing to begin an online PD course in a couple of weeks. Additional information and the link to register is below.

The Kentucky Virtual High School is involved in a major Federal grant called e-Learning Kentucky that is helping to provide online PD courses free and with a highly qualified and well trained facilitator. 75% of the e-Learning money is set aside for research on the effectiveness of Online PD to change teacher practice. This money has helped develop 6 new math and English, Language Arts, online PD courses. These courses will be used to help test the effectiveness of online PD with changing teacher practice.

Participants from grades 4th & 7th (English/LA) and 5th & 8th (math) will take three online courses during 07 Summer, 07 Fall or 08 Spring sessions. These same teachers much take 2 online surveys and also survey their students with another online survey. The student survey data will be instantly available for the teacher to use for making instruction decisions. For their successful participation in the research project participants will be paid $300. In addition they also can receive another $50 for recruiting a colleague. If needed the courses offer graduate credit (tuition is not paid) as well as 24 hours of PD each

Why am I telling you about this?  We need your help to place this information in the hands of folks who need to know about it and may follow through and sign up for the research study. We are in need of at least 60 Kentucky educators. If you meet the requirements above you can also apply!  Please help us and the e-Learning Kentucky initiative by getting this time sensitive information out.

NCTM is now offering expanded topics in its popular E-Workshop series.

Visit nctm.org/eworkshops for a full list of the E-Workshops, including the 2008 dates!

Fulbright Scholar Program for US Faculty and Professionals:  The Fulbright Scholar Program is offering 15 lecturing, research or combined lecturing/research awards in math during the 2008-2009 academic year. U.S. Fulbright Scholars in 150 countries and all regions of the world enjoy an experience of a lifetime, one that provides a broad cultural perspective on their academic disciplines and connects them with colleagues at institutions around the globe.

Awards range from two months to an academic year. Faculty in math may apply not only for awards specifically in their field, but also for one of the many “All Discipline” awards open to any field. Grants are awarded to faculty of all academic ranks, including adjunct and emeritus. In most countries lecturing is in English, though awards in Latin America, Francophone Africa, and the Middle East may require proficiency in another language.

The application deadline for Fulbright traditional lecturing and research grants worldwide is August 1, 2007. U.S. citizenship is required. For other eligibility requirements, detailed award descriptions, and an application, visit our website at www.cies.org, or send a request for materials to apprequest@cies.iie.org

Below are 4 Summer Math PD Opportunities.  To REGISTER for any or all on-line go to http://www.arsi.org  Once there Click on GROWTH then WORKSHOPS. Scroll until you see the description of the pd offering you are interested in. You will need a PO# or check to register.
  1. One to One Math
    • Target Audience: Grades 2-5.  The target audiences for this training are Instructional Assistants; Elementary Special Education   Teachers; elementary math teachers of grades 2-5, Parent Volunteers; and Interested Community Members.
    • Date & Location: North Laurel High School in London, KY on July 23-24, 2007
    • Time: Registration will be at 8:30am and the workshop will begin promptly at 9:00am and conclude by 4 p.m.
    • Cost: $300/participant
    • Facilitator: Terry Parkey, Regional Teacher Partner
    • Overview: Elementary Intervention Strategies for Closing the Gap! This two-day training (Day 1: July 23rd and Day 2: July 24th) is a   way to engage students in grades 2-5 who are struggling with foundational math skills by utilizing models and games as a different way to approach these foundational concepts. This training is designed to support individuals who work One on One with students.
  2. Teaching Fractions Conceptually: Rational Number Project Level 1 and Level 2 Institutes
    • Level 1:
      • Target Audience: Teachers in grades 4-8 including teachers of special needs students.
      • Dates & Locations: July 9-11, 2007 in London, KY
      • July 9-11, 2007 in Prestonsburg, KY
      • July 30-August 1, 2007 in Madisonville, KY
      • Times: Registration will be at 8:30am and the workshops will begin promptly at 9:00am
      • Cost: $400/per participant
      • Facilitators:   London:         Ann Booth and Jim Moore
Prestonsburg: Rhonda Allen and Tami Pickett
Madisonville:  Rhonda Allen and Jill Hall
      • Overview: Originally developed through a joint partnership between 2 universities with funding from the National Science Foundation and currently maintained by the University of Minnesota. The Rational Numbers Project takes a conceptual approach to teaching fractions versus the procedural approach that text books provide. This workshop is for teachers teaching grades 4-8 including special education teachers who have learned first hand that there is a better way to teach fractions. The book of fraction lessons that the participants will receive helps teachers attain goals set by the National council of Teachers of Mathematics by using multiple concrete models, applying fraction ideas to real-world situations, and will give students opportunities to reflect on their thinking about fractions using their informal language as they try to make sense of the formal symbolic system.  The manipulatives used (fraction circles, counting chips, and paper folding) provides students with "hands-on" experiences. The lessons develop understanding of the operations with fractions by using story problems and fraction circles.
    • Level II:
      • Target Audience: Regular and special education teachers of grades 4-9 who have attended the Rational Number Project Level 1 training or have a person in their building that went through Level 1 and the other grade levels want to continue what has been started.
      • Dates & Locations:  July 30-August 1, 2007 in Richmond, KY
      • Times:  Registration will be at 8:30am and the workshops will begin promptly at 9:00am
      • Cost:   $400/participant
      • Facilitators:  Regional Teacher Partners: Terry Parkey and Tami Pickett
      • Overview:  Originally developed through a joint partnership between 2 universities with funding from the National Science Foundation and currently maintained by the University of Minnesota.  The Rational Numbers Project takes a conceptual approach to teaching fractions versus the procedural approach that text books provide. This training is also useful for special education regardless of grade level who have students who struggle with understanding fraction concepts. and regular education teachers who have learned first hand that there is a better way to teach fractions.
  3. Making Linear Algebra Accessible

    • Academic Year Commitments:  There will be 4 follow-ups held during the academic year. The special ed and regular ed collaborating teacher are to attend all follow-ups together. Two of the follow-ups will be held after school in a location that is close enough for participants to drive. Two of the follow-ups will be full days and participants will be paid a stipend or sub reimbursement depending if they are held on Saturday or a school day.
    • Cost:  $1800.00 for the special education and regular educator team.  The registration fee covers the cost of the following: materials for both the regular ed and special education teacher including but not limited to (TI-84 + graphing calculator; Calculator Based Ranger; manipulatives, resource materials), cost of 2 substitute days for the regular ed teacher to attend the follow-ups; $100/stipend for the regular ed and special ed teacher to attend the summer event; $50 stipend for both the regular and special ed teachers to attend the 2 after-school follow-ups; cost of facilitator and space rental fees; meals a.m. refreshments and lunch during the institute and follow-ups).
    • Overview:  The project consists of three components: 1) a 5-day institute, for the special education teacher and their regular education collaborating teacher, centered on best practices, including technology, cooperative learning, and inquiry to develop algebraic content knowledge as well as pedagogy; 2) on-going mentoring and network of support for the participants (regular education and special education teacher team) through four cadre (small group) meetings during the academic year; 3) 2-day follow-up in which participants (regular education and special education teacher team) will receive training in the use of technology to teach algebraic content. DataWORKS Educational Research Math Curriculum Calibration Project

The Kentucky Department of Education is pleased to announce a partnership with the Appalachian Regional Comprehensive Center to bring a DataWORKS Educational Research math Curriculum Calibration project to Kentucky. Curriculum Calibration is a process that analyzes student work in order to measure the percentage of instructional alignment to grade level standards. Through this process, Kentucky will collect valuable evidence to inform math instruction and professional development programs.

DataWORKS will implement this program in Kentucky beginning this month. DataWORKS will register teacher participants, collect samples of student work, analyze student work and prepare a report that provides feedback critical to the ongoing needs of Kentucky’s math program.

The Kentucky Department of Education and the Appalachian Regional Comprehensive Center hope that your district will choose to partner with us in this work. Teachers of grades 4 through 8 and Algebra I are invited to register with DataWORKS at their online registration site www.dataworks-ed.com./kyreg. DataWORKS will then contact teacher participants with details regarding how to collect and identify student work samples.

This collection and identification process is important; however, it is not time consuming. Teacher participants will simply be asked to:

  • Identify three students (a high performing student, a mid-level performing student, and a low-performing student) of one class

  • Collect the math work of those students during one week’s time

  • Label the student work with pre-printed labels provided by DataWORKS

  • Submit the student work in envelopes provided by DataWORKS

Throughout this process, all necessary steps are taken to protect student confidentiality and teacher confidentiality. Data gathered during the Curriculum Calibration will be reported at the state level and will be used to inform all efforts of Kentucky’s math program. Data will also provide information that districts may choose to use when reviewing the implemented curriculum in their schools.

Please carefully consider this opportunity and encourage your grades 4 through 8 math teachers as well as your Algebra I teachers to visit DataWORKS’ online registration site. Registration will take only a few minutes at www.dataworks-ed.com./kyreg.

If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact Maricela Lopez at DataWORKS (800-495-1550). You may also contact the Kentucky Department of Education’s math curriculum staff, Joe McCowan, Charma Leveridge or Ann Bartosh, at (502) 564- 2106.

Formative Assessment is becoming more and more critical as we continue our educational improvement efforts in Kentucky. Many individuals are not well informed about what formative assessment is and is not.

If assessment is the process of gathering information to inform instructional decisions, what are the decisions, that can lead to more learning and how can assessment help? Who is most likely to be making those decisions? What kinds of information are likely to be helpful? This Webinar will explore why and how the answers to these questions define formative assessment in productive terms.
When:  The next webinar is April 20th beginning at 11 and concluding at 12 noon.

KCM announces the common assessment plan for Math Achievement Fund grant recipients
The Kentucky Center for Mathematics, KCM, will require schools receiving the Math Achievement Fund grants from KDE to have all primary intervention students complete the Terra Nova/CTBS at the beginning and ending of the school year. The tests, scoring, and the shipping will be provided by KCM at no cost to the school. KCM will also require MAF grant recipient schools to administer the Harcourt Early Mathematics Diagnostic Assessment, which will be provided by KCM as well. Researchers may also be assessing teachers' beliefs about and attitudes towards mathematics as well as their mathematical content knowledge and their pedagogical content knowledge. Other researchers will also be looking at the fidelity of the intervention programs and the validity of the assessments.
